The Apple iPhone 5

The Apple iPhone 5 is a top-end smartphone that runs on Apple's iOS 7. Upon its release in 2012 it was Apple's flagship smartphone, however, was superseded by the iPhones 5S and 5C. It is still a competent, stylish and well-constructed handset that stands up well against many of its more modern counterparts.


The Apple iPhone 5 has a 4-inch Retina LCD touch screen. 'Retina' is a trademark name used by Apple to indicate screens that they believe to be as good as the human eye can comprehend. This phone displays in 326PPI (Pixels Per Inch). The average PPI for a modern smartphone is 255.


This phone has an 8MP camera, can record in up to 1080p (full HD) and has a 1.2MP front facing camera for taking selfies and making Face Time video calls to other iPhones.


Performance is provided by a 1.3GHz dual core processor and 1GB RAM. Based upon its processor speed and memory, this phone receives an unmudlr performance rating of 70 out of 100.

Battery Life

The iPhone 5 has an estimated battery life of around 8 hours. The average smartphone battery life is around 10 hours. It has a battery capacity of 1400mAh (MilliAmp hours). The average battery capacity is 1950mAh.


1GB (Gigabyte) is equal to roughly 500 pictures or 250 songs. The iPhone 5 comes with 16, 32 or 64 GB internal storage (depending on the model). It also comes with iCloud installed which gives you an additional 5GB of free cloud storage. The iPhone 5 does not have an expandable memory card slot.


The iPhone 5 comes 4G ready so can take advantage of high speed mobile Internet in locations where it is available. It has Bluetooth which enables it to communicate with other Bluetooth devices (such as a Bluetooth handsfree kit). It has Wi-Fi which means that it can connect to your home network or public Wi-Fi hotspots such as those available in many coffee shops, cafes or hotels. The iPhone 5 is also able to connect to HDMI enabled TV's or projectors (requires a Lightning to HDMI adapter).


The iPhone 5 has an FM radio, an MP3 player and comes preloaded with Safari, Apple Maps, iBooks, Passbook, Newsstand and Keynote. Other apps, such as iPhoto, iMovie, Find My Phone, Pages, Numbers, Instagram, WhatsApp, Snapchat, YouTube and Spotify are available to download from the App Store and you can get the latest music, films, TV shows and games from the iTunes Store. The iPhone 5 supports AirPlay video streaming to Apple TV and comes with iCloud (cloud storage) and Siri (voice control) installed as standard. It is also able to integrate with social media via designated Facebook and Twitter Apps.


The iPhone 5 is an appealing, well-constructed and thoughtfully designed device. Although it is no longer the newest offering from Apple, it is still a desirable handset.
